FAQ:
-What species are they? Old World porcupines- African Crested Porcupines
-What are their quills made out of? Keratin! Just like OUR hair! It’s one, very thick strand! Just as we naturally shed our hair when we brush it, they shed them when it’s time for new growth, too! Don’t worry, we don’t go yankin quills outta their butts!
-Do the quills have barbs? New world porcupines DO, but old world porcupines (like Willow and Franky) DO NOT have barbs.
-Do African Crested Porcs “shoot” their quills? Nope! Quills are used as a way to shield their bodies from predators. Predators will lunge onto the quills and impale themselves. I would hate to be a leopard!
-Why are they bigger than expected? Most people confuse porcupines with hedgehogs, African Crested Porcs are the third largest rodent in the world!
-What do they eat? Root vegetables, leaves, nuts, bark, and occasionally animal bone!
Fun Facts: they are excellent at running backwards, they rattle their quills when they are excited, and they stomp their back feet to show aggression
